Number of marine parks: 13
More info

There are 13 Australian Marine Parks off the coast of Western Australia that make up the North-west Marine Parks Network. These marine parks include coral reefs, soft sediments, canyons and limestone pavements. Seabirds, sharks, whales, dolphins, marine turtles and dugong are found here. This gives locals and visitors alike the chance to experience wildlife like no other around offshore reefs, islands, cays and in deeper waters. The iconic whale shark is found at Ningaloo, and every year humpback whales migrate through the region to and from their breeding grounds off the Kimberley coast.

Biodiversity

The North-west Marine Parks Network is characteristed by tropical and sub-tropical marine ecosystems. Shallow-water regions on the continental slope boast spectacular coral reef habitats, including the largely untouched atolls of Mermaid Reef and Ashmore Reef, while deeper habitats include of the slope and abyssal plain include soft sediments, canyons and limestone pavements. The network is influenced by a complex and dynamic system of ocean currents, and together with the wide variety of habitats this region displays, it support a high species diversity and globally significant populations of internationally threatened species. Dugong, humpback whales and marine turtles all aggregate in this region, and it is particularly well known for the iconic whale shark which frequents the area surrounding Ningaloo Reef.

Research

These short articles highlight the findings from ongoing scientific research within the North-west Network, including exciting new discoveries and ideas for future projects.
Red emperor and gold band snapper in Ningaloo Marine Park

A hidden wonderland revealed in Ningaloo Marine Park

Baited remote underwater stereo-videos (stereo-BRUV) were deployed to gather vital biodiversity benchmark data from some of the deepest parts of Ningaloo Reef.

All hands on deck! It takes a lot of science to protect an ocean oasis

At the very edge of continental Australia lies a biological powerhouse. Isolated by hundreds of kilometres of ocean and visible only by a few tiny specks of land, Ashmore Reef is a unique place with a globally important role to play. A visionary scientific partnership, mixing new and old survey methods, is now delivering the data and insight Parks Australia needs to improve management of this ocean oasis.
Kimberley KEFs

An exciting discovery in the depths of the Kimberley Marine Park

During a recent voyage in the Kimberley Marine Park we discovered fields of benthic siphonophores on the sea floor – one of the first records of this group in Australia.
Ningaloo sponges

A treasure trove of sponges

Ningaloo is famed for its corals, but new data has shone a light into the deeper waters and onto its sponge diversity, revealing the region is home to at least 16 new species previously unknown to science.
North Ashmore Reef 2017

Corals of Ashmore Reef face heat waves and coral bleaching in 2016 and 2017.

Ashmore Reef corals faced heat waves in 2016 and 2017 and escaped with relatively little damage, despite unusually warm ocean temperatures in 2016 causing extensive coral bleaching and the death of corals on many reefs across the world.
Great Spotted Cowrie

Diving into Ashmore Reef’s mesophotic zone

Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems, which typically exist between 30-150m depth, represent an unexplored but important part of our marine environment. We undertook extensive surveys of the mesophotic zone of Ashmore Reef to better understand the diversity and distribution of marine communities around the reef and help inform future management of this iconic and isolated marine ecosystem.
Flatback turtle

Reef Life Survey Assessment of coral reef biodiversity in the North-west Marine Parks

A re-survey of sites within the North-west Marine Park Network revealed an increase in fish biomass, richness, biomass of larger fishes, coral cover and macro-invertebrate density at Ashmore Reef Marine Park (IUCN Ia). Many of these changes were not recorded at fished reference sites, suggesting the strict sanctuary zoning is having a positive effect.
