RAMSAR wetlands

Wetlands are a critical part of our natural environment. They protect our shores from wave action, reduce the impacts of floods, absorb pollutants and improve water quality. They provide habitat for animals and plants and many contain a wide diversity of life, supporting plants and animals that are found nowhere else. The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (the Ramsar Convention) was signed in Ramsar, Iran on 2 February 1971. The Ramsar Convention aims to halt the worldwide loss of wetlands and to conserve, through wise use and management, those that remain. There are three Ramsar sites in Australian Marine Parks:

1. Ashmore Reef
2. Coral Sea Marine Park
3. Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs Lord Howe Marine Park.
